Began 2018 with a reading recommendation from my favorite Frenchman (who has bookshelves I love to raid), and ended with a thought-provoking story given by my big boss (who somehow figured I liked science fiction, yay).
Akin to the strange and unpredictable year that went by was the motley collection of literary characters who made my acquaintance.
There were politicians, intrepid explorers, and intelligence officers of both the straight and double-crossing kind.
There were Valkyries and einherjar, wizards, High Elves, spacefarers and time travelers.
There were stories told by Iranian women, neurotic kids, BBC foreign correspondents, and about trailblazing queer icons.
There were English butlers, Chinese scientists, French journalists and Italian policemen.
And there were magical coats and historical chickens, Valinor and Valhalla by the way of the Discworld, and misty tea estates perched close to the sky.
So because I am a nerd about keeping lists of the new books I read, here is the 2018 edition:
Bel Ami, Guy de Maupassant
What Happened, Hillary Rodham Clinton

True Faith and Allegiance, Tom Clancy by Mark Greaney
