Back in the sandbox, and back with my toes in the Gulf because after shisha and suhour at 1 AM, my crazy spontaneous friends and I decided to head to the Saudi border. You know, just because.
So here we are in a speeding SUV, sipping karak tea, music going full blast, when our driver says Quick, make a decision! Straight to Saudi or right to Sealine?
No one responds at first, and then the friend riding shotgun says Right! at the last possible second, so the Nissan swerves sharply onto the road to Mesaieed.
We stop for gas- because of course we decided to set out on this pre-dawn road trip low on petrol – switch into 4×4 drive and go off-road.
By 2 AM we were parked close to the water’s edge.
It’s so liberating to kick off your sandals and bury your feet in the sand on a dark beach, and then jump fully clothed into warm, limpid waters illuminated only by the light of the moon.
