Happy to report that the great Philippine tradition of road tripping to the beaches during Holy Week continues here. 🙂
I happen to work with some people who are spontaneous enough to decide at 4.45 pm on Friday to go on an overnight desert safari on Easter weekend. A quick show of hands on a hastily created WhatsApp group, and by 5pm we were booked.
The polar bear was excited to safari, too. After all, he’s always wanted to mingle with the locals.
A pair of Land Cruisers transported us to the beach- yes, the beeeeeaaaach, where tents stood waiting in the twilight. We dumped our stuff and raced down the shore and….. I finally got to swim in saltwater again.
That was beautiful.
I felt very Percy Jackson-ish, recharging myself by soaking up the sea. You know how when you’ve been away from your natural element for so long and then all of a sudden you’re back in it? Greatest feeling in the universe.
Could’ve floated in the Gulf all night, but the barbecue called. We had dinner in one of the huts, and again it felt like being back home, just having sugba on the beach in Moalboal. We Cebuanos don’t have a monopoly on good times like that, I realize, and that it’s something that transcends nationalities.
(Profound thoughts while munching on lamb kofta.)
Post barbecue we moved down to the shore. It was quiet and deserted save for the occasional guest wandering by, or SUV rolling past. You could sit back and stare at the moon rising steadily higher in the sky (I did), take long walks (I did), dip your feet in the shallows (I did), or smoke shisha and dance – Alors on danse!- and listen to our Argentine sous chef strum his guitar and croon in Spanish.
So much for those two tents reserved for us, though; half the group opted for al fresco slumber.
To be continued….
